Where the Earth Ends: A Journey to the Edge of the World
Discover one of Saudi Arabia's most breathtaking natural wonders — just 90 minutes from Riyadh
There is a moment, standing at the rim of Jebel Fihrayn, when the world simply drops away. The plateau falls in a sheer cliff face of more than 300 metres, plunging into a vast, silent valley that stretches to the horizon without a single road, building or sign of human life. This is the Edge of the World — Jebel Fihrayn — and few places on the Arabian Peninsula are more humbling.
Located roughly 90 kilometres northwest of Riyadh in the Tuwaiq Escarpment, the Edge of the World is one of Saudi Arabia's most dramatic landscapes. For millions of years, wind and water have sculpted these sandstone cliffs into a natural balcony overlooking an ancient sea basin. Stand here at golden hour and you begin to understand why early travellers believed they were looking out at the very edge of creation.
The View That Stops Time
The escarpment runs for hundreds of kilometres, but the most accessible viewpoint is reached after a 4WD drive across open desert tracks from the village of Al Marzuqa. The journey itself — past thorn scrub, rocky wadis and the occasional herd of camels — is part of the experience. As you climb towards the plateau, the flatlands of the Najd give way to a sudden, vertiginous panorama.
On clear winter mornings, visibility stretches for well over 100 kilometres. Hawks and eagles circle lazily below the clifftop, giving the rare sensation of looking down on soaring birds. At sunset, the rock turns amber, then deep crimson, and the shadows in the valley below grow long and blue.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
A 4WD vehicle is essential — the access track is unpaved and can be rough after rain.
Visit between October and March for the most comfortable temperatures; summer heat can be extreme.
Bring at least 2 litres of water per person, sunscreen and a hat.
Hire a local guide in Riyadh — the route across the desert can be confusing without GPS waypoints.
Camping is possible near the escarpment; a night under the stars here is unforgettable.
Vision 2030 and the Future of the Edge
Under Saudi Vision 2030, Jebel Fihrayn is being developed as a managed adventure tourism destination. New visitor infrastructure, marked trails and guided excursion programmes are being introduced to protect the fragile geology while opening the site to a broader audience. The goal is to transform this hidden gem into a world-class ecotourism destination — without sacrificing the raw solitude that makes it extraordinary.
✦ "The Edge of the World is not just a landscape — it is an experience that resets your sense of scale. Standing there, you realise how small, and how fortunate, you are."
Saudi Arabia is a country of extraordinary contrasts, and Jebel Fihrayn represents its wild, geological heart. Whether you are a hiker, a photographer or simply someone who seeks the kind of silence that modern cities can never offer, the Edge of the World will not disappoint.
